Oscars 2014 Wrap-up | Best Awards Acceptance Speeches – The Actors

I Love awards winner speeches, especially at the Oscars because they made it so official so emotional and so deep that they can sometimes be a perfect example to any people that has to prep an official discourse. This year acceptance speeches were about ‘Dreams and dreamers’ ; ‘Women empowerment’ ‘Being an Hero’ ; Perseverance ; Freedom ; Fighting and Living. This is very Hollywood style but every discourse has to send strong messages on actual subject, such as Leto talking about his single mom or addressing the current issues in Ukraine and Venezuela.

Mc Conaughey’s “I am my own hero” speech was a bit selfish but it touch me as to help me to grow my faith so it works for me !

“In 1971, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school drop-out and a single mum but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children, she encouraged her kids to be creative and work hard and do something special. That girl is my mother and she’s here tonight – thank you for teaching me to dream.”

Jared dedicated his award to “the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS. And to those of you out there who has ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love tonight I stand here in front of the world with you and for you “. What a great and humble speech. Jared Leto speech was speechless. His reference to his single mom was very emotional and touching for everyone. Even though it makes him looks like a 40′s momy-boys. Jared Leto made a reference to the revolutions in Ukraine and Venezuela and I thank him for it because in my minds the final goal to this tv show is to be able to link arts with real life issues such as people fighting for freedom.

Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McCaunoghey made himself a reputation for weird complicated pot smelling speeches. When watching it live I understand NOTHING. Not even a word. But reading it afterward, It make all senses and it sounds okay to me.

“There’s about three things… that I need each day. One of them is something to look up to, another is something to look forward to, and another is something to chase.

To my hero, that’s who I chase. When I was 15 years old I had a very important person in my life come to me and say ‘who’s your hero,’ and I said ‘I’m not going to think about that, give me a couple of weeks.’ I come back two weeks later this person comes up and says ‘who’s your hero’ and I thought about it… ‘it’s me in ten years.’ So I turn 25 ten years later and that same person comes back to me and says ‘are you a hero?’ and I was like ‘not even close. My hero’s me at 35…’ My hero’s always 10 years away. I’m never going to be a hero. I’m never going to obtain that, I know I’m not.

Comparing to Jared Leto, his co-star in Dallas Buyer Club, his speech is very self-centred, very “Me Me Me” speech. Salon.com wrote a piece on how selfish and wrong his speech was.

“When you’re Matthew McConaughey, you think a lot about what it means to be Matthew McConaughey. [...] McConaughey went on at length about how he was his own hero — he couldn’t have spared 10 seconds to acknowledge the heroism of people like the man he played?”

Can’t agree more on this. But it’s his oscars, his moment, and it still a very self-empowering  and driving speech. Congrats !
